Homemade Goodness: Grapefruit Lip Balm
Ingredients (2 tubes & 1 5g pot):
1 & 1/4 tsp Beeswax
1 tsp Cocoa Butter
1 tsp Shea Butter
3/4 tsp Jojoba Oil
5 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil
Small heatproof container (beaker, shot glass etc.)
Stirrer (teaspoon, chopstick etc.)
Heat source (Microwave, double boiler etc.)
Lip balm tubes or pot
Step 1: Combine beeswax, cocoa butter, and jojoba oil in a heatproof container.
Step 2: Heat mixture till melted. If using microwave, heat in 10s intervals to prevent boiling/burning.
Step 3: Stir in shea butter and grape fruit essential oil. If mixture hardens, melt in heat source again. Take note that shea butter tends to get gritty when heated in high heat or reheated too many times.
Step 4: Let mixture cool a little before pouring into tube. If mixture if too hot, it will leak though the mechanism.
Step 5: Let the lip balm in tubes harden for a few hours or 15 mins in the fridge or it will break when you twist it up and down.
Tip 1: Pour in tube first, remelt and pour left over in pot.
Tip 2: When lip balm in tube hardens, the will be a “divot” in the centre. Remelt mixture and pour over it to fill it up. Alternative, after the balm hardens, you can twist it up cut off a little of balm to make a flat surface.
Tip 3: If there’s only a little left in container or unable to reheat, scrape harden lip balm from container and transfer into pot.
Tip 4: Colour lip balm with mica or a little of lipstick to make tinted lip balm.
